Last week some users informed us that they are experiencing BIOS / HDD user password protection and security lock.

All major operating systems offer a way to set a stunning login password. People get the impression that access to their technology is protected and their files are truly private. Unfortunately, this is just an illusion. For example, if you boot Ubuntu from a USB stick, you can mount the Windows partition and read all files without providing any personal information. LPeople are a little shocked when they find out how easy it is.

However, this does not mean that protecting your login on your account balance with a password is not needed, but rather as a method of restricting access when you are currently leaving your desktop. But what if you want to make sure no one can play certain files while you leave the device unattended for hours or days?

Your Hard Drives Have Their Own “operating System”

Full disk encryption can be one way to keep your data confidential. Another simple solution is to password protect the hard drive itself. Firmware is software that is attached to the device and on each of the hard drives. This is independent of your operating system and can enforce its own rules, which means no one can read and write it without a hard drive as long as the correct password is set. The drive will most likely refuse access on its own and therefore cannot be tricked by another running system. Even if the hard drive is removed andtransferred to another computer or laptop, access will be denied.

How To Set Up A Hard Drive Password Via BIOS Or UEFI

You can think of UEFI as a functional type of micro-operating system that can run on your computer before all other components are loaded (eg bootloaders, Windows, drivers, etc.). You will enter the configuration menu to set the correct passwords. BIOS is enabled, but only used on older computers.

    Open UEFI / BIOS Setup

Unfortunately, there is no standard way to access this plan. Each motherboard manufacturer is free to choose whatever configuration keys they want. But in general, pressing the power button on your computer will quickly take you to DEL , ESC , F1 , F2 , F10 , F12 to invoke the configuration. If you have a BIOS, this is the only way to access the environment. Press one of these keys several times to ensure that UEFI / BIOS will automatically select it. If none of the keys work, you can look in your personal motherboard manual You can find it or on the Internet to find the key you want.

With modern UEFI implementations, you can boot my computer directly from Windows using this setup menu.

    Installation Discs For Password Lock

The uefi / bios menus also do not have a standard set in Brick. Each manufacturer implements their desired version. The menu can be a graphical user interface (GUI) or a solid text user interface (TUI).

Use the left or right arrow keys to navigate to the Security tab (or similar) if your configuration looks like the one below.

Otherwise, scroll up until you find an option where you can set hard drive passwords, such as hard drive passwords. If you’re having trouble finding it, check your motherboard manual.

Usually you need to find the hard drive codename in this list, select it and define a user password and possibly a master password.

Warning: If you forget your password, there is no power reset method.Essentially, you are losing your best reader; it becomes an unnecessary package. It is true that some disks can be completely erased to reset the password, but this is usually the exception rather than the exact rule.

  • Do not confuse a custom floppy disk with a UEFI / BIOS user password.

If the password / master user options for hard drives are grayed out, it means you need to coast the machine. Just turn off the game, turn it on again, then just press the desired key to complete the UEFI / BIOS setup. This must be done before Windows starts, otherwise this UEFI / BIOS will lock the hard disk security environment as a protection against unauthorized modification (for example, malware can use this to lock people out).

Set the hard disk user password. After you save it, your computer will ask you for this password every time you turn it on to unambiguously unlock the drive. When you have available permission, set a master password to make sure you overwrite the factoryOdessa settings.

Save BIOS / UEFI settings to exit. (The correct implementation key must be listed somewhere on the screen.)

    Conclusion

At this point, if you leave your computer unattended, you can be sure that your hard drive will be safe. And if you want, you can also password protect access to BIOS / UEFI settings. This is commonly referred to as the “administrator password”. The “user password” can be used for another end purpose and is not required in this particular case. However, if only one is available, install it to prevent unwanted changes to BIOS / UEFI settings. However, it should be noted that if the client opens your computer case, its password may be reset. Consider this a “lightweight” security measure.

Whereas the operating system password determines whether clients can log in after starting a computer, and BIOS information determines whether you can start that computer, the hard drive password controls access to the hard drive itself. saved in the firmware of the DVD player itself.

On the computer motherboard, find one of the BIOS reset or password jumpers or DIP switches and change its level. This jumper is often referred to as CLEAR, CLEAR CMOS, JCMOS1, CLR, CLRPWD, PASSWD, PASSWORD, PSWD, or PWD. Some computers may also clear the account information by leaving the boot jumper enabled (one or not closed contact).
