Windows 2000
Right-click My Computer, then select Properties.
Go to Control Panel> System and Security> System.Select Advanced System Settings to open your system properties. Now open the “Advanced” tab.In the “Performance” section, select “Settings”. Open the extended hook. In the “Virtual Storage” section, select “Change”. Here are your options for virtual storage.
In the System Properties dialog box, just click Advanced
Click performance options.

In the virtual storage area, click Edit to improve file sharing.
Windows 2000 requires an initial value of 126 MB for debugging.
After changing the setting, click Install and then click OK.
In the Control Panel Applet dialog box, click OK until the following message appears:
Changes you make require a computer restart before they take effect.
Click OK to close this Performance Options dialog box, then just click OK to close the System Properties dialog box.
When prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.
Windows XP
- Click Start, right-click My Computer and select Properties.
- In the System Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
- Click “Settings” in the performance area.
- In the Performance dialog box of the Options dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
- Click Modify in the Virtual Memory panel.
- Change the appropriate size and the maximum size value for which you want to set a larger value, click Set, then click OK.
- Click OK to open the Options dialog box and then click OK to close the System Properties dialog box.

With personal storage, a computer can use a persistent hard drive for random access to good old random access memory (RAM). In this case, the virtual memory of the computer is used to expand the conventional memory installed on the computer.
