On top of that, has anyone else experienced stuttering / audio dropouts lately? Oblivion plays for about 10 minutes, then the main ambient music starts to disappear and as a result it breaks off and sounds almost like a slashed record. I tried updating my own drivers but didn’t install any codecs. I can also play music files outside of the game in a growing media player without any hindrance, so they cannot be broken down into codecs, right? Sound seems to be one of the most overlooked issues in Oblivion’s missions.

Without a single hardware accelerated audio solution, most of Oblivion’s audio processing has to be done by the CPU. Since the processor must also handle all disk access, AI, and data management, any process that can be outsourced to a fully dedicated processor improves overall performance. To further exacerbate the confusion, Windows XP and Vista handle sound differently. Vista (and directx10) removed DirectSound and DirectMusic.
