Various Ways To Troubleshoot Tom Martino Referral List Issues

This document describes the reasons why a Fiber Channel (FC) port is always disabled on a multilayer director switch (MDS) or Nexus FC switch due to “Disabled Error – High Bit Error Rate”.

Confirm
Step 1. Use the show interface command to verify that the switch has detected almost all problems and disabled the port.
Second step. Use the show interface transceiver fcX / Y detail command to display signal strength information for a small form factor pluggable (SFP) transceiver.
If the UI is not currently available, you can access it first:

Troubleshooting
Bit Error Thresholds
- Defective or tight cable.
- Bad or faulty GBIC or SFP.
- GBIC or SFP is set to around 1 Gbps, but was previously 2 Gbps.
- GBICs or SFPs are also listed for 2 Gbps, but used at 4 Gbps.
- A short cable is used for very long distances and a long cable is usually used for short distances.
- Temporary loss of synchronization.
- Loose cable at one or more ends of the connection.
- Bad GBIC or SFP connection on one or both ends.
Patience BER is recognized if 15 error traps occur within 5 minutes. By default, the switch deactivates CP when the threshold is reached. Use a no command shutdown and shutdown sequence to wake up the interface. Exit
Eliminate faulty physical peripherals with step-by-step repairs to cables, GBICs / SFPs, and patch panels.
You can also configure the switch so that the interface is not dropped when the threshold is exceeded. By default, the threshold closes the interface.

Note. Regardless of the option associated with the switchport ignore bit-errors command, the trusted switch generates a syslog message because the threshold has been exceeded.

Once the problematic hardware has been identified and repaired, you can expect the interface to run continuously to trigger the port with bit errors if you are no longer seen afterwards.

Notice two similar errors where the port (s) are disabled whenever 15-bit error bursts occur for 5 hours instead of 5 minutes.
This is still a physical layer issue that needs to be fixed.
FC interworking disabled due to “too long bit error time” at low speed
Error fc3 / 1 (error disabled – packet error rate too high)
