Sometimes your system may display an I / O error message while ripping DVD from Ubuntu. This error can have several causes.
People explain that opening DVDs and ( vlc showing the DVD menu) magically makes data available to dd , but no one has yet explained why or how VLC provides this performance.
I was able to reproduce the behavior of objects when trying to play a new DVD on my computer from a specific Kodi device connected to my best TV using SMB to find the DVD root directory – hard drive network connection. This only works if I first open the DVD with VLC, which allowed Kodi to play the files like magic.

So you don’t always get encrypted data that cannot be read during playback ni DVD; the drive usually does not return bits unless the program on the machine has authenticated itself to retrieve the DVD-specific IOCTLs found by the Linux kernel (DVD_AUTH in some cases). Hence, it shows up as an I / O error.

VLC performs this secret handshake whereby libdvdcss reappears to do so in GetBusKey () in css.c . Presumably a standalone program bundled as opposed to libdvdcss could be written to determine which drive to access as personal files rather than relying on anything related to VLC. Once unlocked, Ride cannot determine which program is reading it, so it re-sends the bits (still encrypted, but readable correctly) to everyone, including dd and cp >.
(Interestingly, DVD-IOCTLs are also the only real way to get the decryption key used to decrypt data on the hard drive Ike after reading it. If you copied the directory of types from files, you won’t have access to the private IOCTLs to get the keys, so libdvdcss statistically uses cryptanalysis so you can break the encryption.)

Try dd duplicating your good DVD. Assuming your DVD drive is / dev / sr0, run something dd like if = / dev / sr0 of = dvd-image.iso, dvd-image.iso is the Persona file name (note that its size is 4.5 GB).
