About a year ago, your own full MySpace dump surfaced on average due to data leaks – Internet Joe. This extremely popular dump (15 GiB compressed) is extremely interesting because many user accounts use two different password hashes. The original hash is unsalted and is a striped option type of 10 lower case characters from the user’s original password. The second hash, which is not always present, contains a salt and represents the user’s unique full password.
So the contents of the dump are summarized as follows:

There are about 116.8 million specific unsalted sha1 hashes and about 68.5 billion salted sha1 hashes.
Of course, the people you crack passwords with will tell you that unsalted hashes are priceless because they don’t represent the passwords of real customers. You’re right. But when you crack these hashes, you are faced with a very interesting password cracking candidate for salted hashes. And the article isinteresting!
After cracking an almost unsalted hash, the question arises: how to crack its salted counterpart? Spoiler alert: Hashcat, which refers to an Nvidia GTX 1080, is literally over 200 times slower than John the Ripper on a single CPU core in this particular project.
I’ve been using John One’s Ripper (on the CPU) for a long time and am a fan of smart scheduling. Working on the CPU requires purposeful planning and planning. And the more versatile your software is, the more effective your audience can be. Hashcat is on the other important end of the spectrum: significant performance thanks to GPU search engine optimization. But it lacks the most intelligent attack mode: “simple”.
Single mode works by calculating candidate passwords based on GECOS features such as login, username, email address, and other addresses. Therefore, it makes sense to specify the full password for the JtR list, and not just hashes. This password metadata is especially good when you want to create contextual password suggestions.
A password recovered from an unsalted hash is more than a recovery concept Its counterpart, in many cases it is also a realistic user password. And if that never happens, simple variations driven by deficit adjustment will suffice.
You probably guessed it: I created the dataset by cracking passwords from unsalted hashes, which were usually paired with the corresponding salted hash. Well-known passwords mimic the logins of certain users, so if set up correctly, John Ripper will only check that particular candidate against a common equivalent hash with a salt.
Since I couldn’t use this attack on a huge file in JtR out of anger, I had to break it into small pieces. However, I was able to recover 36708130 bookmarks in just 87 minutes. A from the point of view of a single-core processor.
To find these passwords with Hashcat, I used a wordlist from a GTX 1080. Implementation took about 14 days. No matter how fast your GPU is (about 1000 MH/s in this case), it will mindlessly parse every candidate for every hash. Remember that hashes are salty, so everyone needs their own Accounts. So if your file contains 60 million hashes, your GPU will try 16.6 candidates in an instant (1000/60). This is very slow and therefore inefficient.
