Recently, a number of users reported to us that they were experiencing an office Document Caching Error.

Set breakpoints in the DLL project.Right-click on the DLL project and select “Set as Startup Project”.Make sure the key solution configuration field is set to make debugging easier. Press F5, click the lawn start arrow, or choose Debug > Start Debugging.

If it is an application link (DLL), the debug badges (the “pdb” file) must be in the same folder as the particular DLL. Check if your projects are traveling with debug symbols (Project Properties => Build => Advanced => Output/Debug Info = Complete); and if your company copied the DLL, add the bulk of the PDB.

DLL (Dynamic Link Library) is typically a library that contains code, and therefore data, that can be used by multiple applications. You have the ability to use Visual Studio to create, transform, build, and debug DLLs.

You usually call the corresponding DLL from another project. When families debug the calling project, you can debug the DLL code from top to bottom based on passing the DLL configuration.

DLL Debug Configuration

In order for the debugger to link to a particular C++ DLL, the C++ code must emit DebuggableAttribute.

Select the C++ DLL outlook in Solution Explorer and select the appropriate properties icon, right-click the update and select Properties.
In the Assets panel under Linker > Debugselect “Yes” (/ASSEMBLYDEBUG) for “Debug Build”.

Specify Location Of C/C++ DLLs

To debug an external DLL, the calling project must be able to find the DLL, which will be a .pdb file and any other documents required by the DLL. You can have a custom build task. Copy these files to the Debug source folder, or manually copy the files there.

For C/C++, you can specify the location of the header and .lib files in the online project instead of copying them to the output folder.

Select the C/C++ DLL project in Solution Explorer and click the Properties icon or any other project by right clicking and select Properties.
At the top of the properties panel, under Configuration, select All Configurations.
The C/C++ General>>Additional Include Directories section usually specifies a folder containing the header files.
Under Linker > General > Additional Library Directories, specify the folder containing the .lib files.
In Linker > Input > Additional Dependencies, specify the full path followed by the file name for the file library.
Select OK.

When debugging, make sure you can build a debug version of this DLL before you start debugging. When debugging a DLL, the caller should be able to find our pdb .File and any other written documents needed by the DLL.

You can create any custom build task to copy the dll files to the Debug output folder, or you will have to copy the files there manually.

Be careful when calling a built-in DLL, this is indeed the right place. This may seem specific, but if the calling application understands the DLL and loads another copy into the DLL, the debugger will not hit the breakpoints you set.

Unable To Debug DLL

Start Debugging The Calling Application

Open your project in the calling application, start debugging by choosing Debug > Start Debugging or pressing F5.
