Over the past few days, some of our readers have reported to us that in Windows Server 2008, they have encountered an issue with automatic receive window optimization disabled.

Introduction

Windows Vista includes an automatic receive window optimization feature that improves the performance of programs that receive TCP data files over the network. However, this property is disabled by default for products that use the Windows Services HTTP (WinHTTP) interface. Some examples of your programs using WinHTTP are Automatic Updates, Windows Update, Remote Desktop Connection, Windows Explorer (copying files over the network), and Sharepoint (WebDAV).

Receive side scaling involves processing packets received from multiple processors in parallel while avoiding packet reordering. It avoids packet reordering by completely separating packets into “threads” in addition to using a single processor to create all packets to aid a thread. Packets are divided into common streams by calculating the hash value supported by certain fields in each packet. In addition, the received hash values are forced to choose one for the processor receiving the stream. This approach ensures that all packets belonging to an extended TCP connection will be queued for service by the same processor in the same order in which they were received for the network adapter.
