Ben Edelman prepared a nice post for Valentine’s Day. I’m sure the people behind C-NetMedia may disappear. Well, drop these guys. First, this follows all the misleading Google ads that make C-NetMedia products “official” and try to link them to Spybot, not to mention destroying what is really a great antivirus product – spyware.

While Ben points out that C-NetMedia is generally not affiliated in any way with CNET, the media company that owns, among other things, ZDNet, the host of this blog, he is not, in fact, fulfilling the obvious desire of vendors with the largest anti-spyware software channel software, Download.com CNET.

Ben then worries that the C-NetMedia product is misidentifying “43 Parasites” on his new PC and is demanding new money.

My advice to most of the people at C-NetMedia is: run, run, incredibly fast. Ben is after you. Where and Ben is chasing the FTC is really not far behind!

Not all anti-spyware classes are as advertised. Some really care about interest x users to identify and mitigate real privacy, security, balance, or performance risks. Others resort to various tricks to confuse people about what they are getting and why they supposedly need it.

This report presents the results of my research into the C-NetMedia anti-spyware software. I show:

  • Misleading advertising, misleading product manufacturers and misleading website design falsely suggest an association with leading security companies. Details.
  • Using dozens of disparate product names discourages consumers from learning more about C-Net, its reputation, best practices, and more. Details.
  • High pressure sales tactics including false positives, rush to pay for an upgrade. details.
  • Please note that C-NetMedia is not affiliated with the technology of the popular news site CNET Networks. Details.

Misleading advertising, false product names and misleading adsRunning an online business scheme falsely suggests being a leader in corporate security.

Some C-NetMedia products may be marketed using methods, keywords, price tags, and page layouts that falsely suggest that people belong to the mainstream security industry. This offer relates both to the capabilities of C-Net itself and to the activities of C-Net’s marketing/advertising partners.

See the first three Google search ads for “spybot”, one of the first popular anti-spyware products (full name “Spybot Search & Destroy”). As seen on the right, the first two ads specifically mention “Spybot”, the first two new names in the index; the third company in its domain. In addition, all three advertisements also embody the distinctive “Search and Destroy” title of the original publication, which specifically describes each of our genuine Spybot products. However, the truth is that each of these three advertisements usually takes users to the independent website spywarebot.com (emphasis mine) (screenshots: 2, 1, 3). Click onThe first ad immediately directs the user to spywarebot.com via ClickBank Network Exact ads. As far as our own second tier and ads go, traffic usually goes through independent “landing page” websites, which in turn usually display ClickBank links advertising Spywarebot. These landing pages are usually hosted on misleadingly named spybot-sd-info.com and www-spybotcom.com, both of which suggest (but incorrectly) belong to a genuine “Spybot” product.

C-NetMedia dates similar advertisements to find “Ad-Aware”, the 1st known anti-spyware program. At the top of the ad is C-Net adwarealert.com, a name that is likely to confuse users as the ad’s domain and person’s title are changed by one letter at the user’s request. The first ad directs the user to Adwarealert, while the second usually directs the user to the www-ad-ware.Landing webpage, which also promotes adwarealert.com (again, the ClickBank method).

Other C-NetMedia business partners seep into search results for spyware removal. For exampleFor example, see “Spybot-free.com” ads with “Spybot” – “Search & Destroy” detectable tags to help the C-Net site spywarebot.com. Also see C-Net Registrysmart.com’s ad titled “Microsoft Antispyware” in Google results for “Microsoft Spyware”. Since the title of the Registrysmart offer advertises “Microsoft User Antispyware”, it’s reasonable to assume that the advertisement will lead to the official Microsoft website, which even offers a free “Microsoft Antispyware” service or product. In fact, when it comes to paid products, the link leads better to the C-Net site.

  • C-NetMedia unfortunately can claim that these ads were distributed by agents. But the actions of these partner sites are revealing – they come from well-known search terms like “spy bot”, “ad-aware” and “ad-supported”. These promotions are also historic: my fake and misleading pay-per-click ads from October 2006 show that some have been using these ads for over a year. In addition, C-Net has the right and ability to control Affiliates acting on behalf of C-Net and Edge by monitoring such activities andlimiting their intentions as they see fit. Finally, the FTC lawsuit confirms that small businesses can be held liable for the actions of their affiliates and marketing partners. See, for example, USA v. APC Entertainment (an advertiser of sexually explicit and unsolicited commercial mail sent by its affiliates), Zango, Inc. personal file. (an advertiser of responsible, inconsistent and fraudulent installation of its software by its affiliates), About Direct Revenue LLC (coming soon).
