When I try to install SocketTools I get a nice error that says IKernel.exe cannot be installed. This error usually occurs when an instance of the InstallShield engine is already starting or one of the InstallShield components is marked read-only.

Additional information

SocketTools creates an InstallShield for installation and copies the configuration engine directly to disk during a workflow. If InstallShield is unable to automatically copy or download these files, you will see this error message. If you’ve done another install recently, the InstallShield engine may still work. Try rebooting your system and usually retry the installation. If the same error occurs quickly during a restart, then the Try some of the following steps:

Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete.Select Task Manager.Select the Processes tab.Find IKernel.exe. If it is running, select it by clicking End Process.Select Yes for the main Task Manager warning dialog box.h.

Open an administrative command prompt. If you are performing a public installation on Windows 7, go to a command prompt under Programs | Standard and right-click, then Run Selection As Administrator. If you are installing Windows 8 or Windows 10, right-click the Windows icon in the taskbar and choose Command Prompt (Admin) from the menu. You must retain admin access to resolve this issue.

Replace the current working directory with the new folder C: Program Files Common Files InstallShield. On 64-bit versions of Windows, change the working directory to the default directory under C: Program Files (x86) Common Files InstallShield. Rename the engine folder to a different name, reformulate it to OldEngine. If you can’t rename it, another process will open that folder. So you can try restarting the system and then renaming it. After renaming the folder, restart your computer and try installing community again.

If you installed SocketTools on Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 or laterx versions for Windows, the installer should display a UAC prompt on the screen informing you that these operations require elevated privileges. If for some reason you do not receive this prompt, try explicitly starting the installation by simply right-clicking the installation executable file and choosing Run as administrator.

I have exactly the same problem (with just one that launches most of the programs I try to install: our own Europa Universalis III game, which is known to be compatible with many 64-bit Windows that I run). I tried to follow the advice of the specific link posted by dodger46, but usually the only folders I have in C: / Program Files (x86) / Common Files / InstallShield are “Driver” then “Professional”; there is no “engine” folder. I saw anyway that KernelUpdate.exe is running, but I get the following error:

Failed to start InstallShield Engine (iKernel.exe).

The class is not registered.

(This time it is “Class” because unlike “Interface” it is not registered). When I go to the C: /…/ InstallShield / Driver file, there are two folders labeled “9” and “11”, each with a folder named “Intel 32”. So I tried to rename the Driver directory and run IKernelUpdate the.Again exe, but still got the same error.

EDIT Some: now it says “Class not necessarily registered” instead of “Interface not registered” in case I try to install Europe. I don’t know when the experts’ statement changed.
