If you’re still connecting to a remote server entirely from a Mac OS X terminal and are getting a “Critical error opening: xterm-color” message when performing certain operations on the remote server, you might want to change your terminal declaration setting and add a TERM declaration for the terminal itself. bash profile on the server for the other end to prevent the error message from appearing. There may be other ways to detach a device on the server side, but the previous post shows a faster and easier solution.

This may also affect users on other running systems that use SSH to login to allow them to connect to a remote server, but I’m drawing on a Mac and that’s where I’m having a problem. If you’re implementing something else, adding a TERM section at the end of this article may help.

In the command group, do the following:

TERM=xterm

This will automatically take effect for all future commands that are executed. If you log out and log out again, it will revert back to the main TERM parameter that your SSH client programs sent last time. To make changes permanently add the specific line above to your .bash_profile or just .bashrc on the remote server.
