There are almost always three immediate and significant abbreviations:
BASCOM is the program that BAS wanted to compile to EXE given BASICA, the IBM version of BASIC to get DOS and the predecessor GW-BASIC. It handles both the most important BAS files in binary as well as ASCII format, or it supports pretty much anything that EGA uses (some SCREEN modes). QuickBASIC 4.5 is the direct successor to GW-BASIC and can probably handle 95% of all GW-BASIC programs along with other programs that rely on most esoteric functions. FreeBASIC is easy to develop, but it handles almost all QB programs correctly, so it does very well with GW-BASIC programs. Context: I still run into this doubt when asked about Yahoo! I’m looking for significant differences between GW-BASIC and FreeBASIC. In the first case, you really need to consistently specify -lang deprecated even to support line numbers. DISABLING A KEY is not necessary for obvious and reasonable reasons. QB ignores this important command, but FBC (FreeBASIC compiler) throws an error. If I can’t say it doesn’t matter for some assertions, I should fork my code for the FBC version as I like.
KEY (#) ON / OFF and just ON KEY GOSUB (#) is not supported. This is really annoying, but I have already made changes for support INKEY $ queries in QB, so they will presumably work in FreeBASIC.
DEF FNname () as opposed to supported. You can create complete services, but not just with simple lines like GW style. For me, this may be another clue that I will use. I don’t think it will be that difficult for you to implement, maybe I’ll post it on your own forum.
EXTERR () is not supported. I am not using it now, but how difficult would it be to maintain it?
GOSUB # “RETURN only works if you specify Qb” -lang. Line number support can be enabled with “-lang deprecated”. If you try to call RETURN now, it will say “Illegal outside blah blah blah or SUB block.”
SCREEN () is not locked. By this I mean not the whole procedure for switching the screen mode, but a function that returns all the values of one at one position in the text screen buffer. It looks like I am declaring a variable with this name.
