Flashing Dell BIOS In A Clean Linux Environment

As Linux and Ubuntu distributions become more popular on Dell systems, there may be more situations where the Linux environment is virtually non-existent.

    UEFI capsule Updates

If your own system is listed at https://fwupd.org/lvfs/devicelist, the program supports UEFI capsule updates and should be able to update while the system is running.

Ubuntu 16.04 and later will automatically notify you of new BIOS versions. If an update is available, a warning will be displayed to flash the update.

Note. On other Linux distributions, these special tools for flashing capsules can Require manual installation. Contact your dealer for more information.

If your operating system does not support UEFI Capsule updates:

    • Promote new systems (post-2015) in section 2 below.
    • For older systems and versions running Linux / Ubuntu, the process for creating another bootable USB BIOS is shown in Sections 3 and 4 below.

Update BIOS On Supported UEFI Systems (since 2015)

    BIOS Boot Menu Updates

All Dell systems released in 2015 that support the updated BIOS firmware from the boot menu. Follow the exact instructions below to update the BIOS on these systems.

    1. Format the USB storage device.

Users need to format their USB drive to FAT32 On Ubuntu 16.04 and later, this can be done by following these steps:

      Why is this

      1. Connect a specific USB storage device, such as a full memory stick.

      2. Click or tap one of the Ubuntu Dash icons.

      3. Please enter a drive related to the search for the “Disks” application.

Note. For other Linux returns, you may need to check with your distribution vendor for sufficient reason to know about formatting a random access USB storage device.

  • Note the section type below. (2 in the images above.)

    • If the partition contains FAT32, it is already properly prepared.

    • If the type of the main section is different, it must be formatted.

  • Click the accessory symbol above the “B” dimension (3 Fig. 2 above).

  • Select a format.

  • It is convenient to imagine that this is FAT.

    2. Select the BIOS update and save it to your web browser.

    3. Go to the Downloads folder and copy the BIOS type to your USB stick.

Note. BIOS Flash has the extension .exe. Even though Linux cannot open this concept natively, the BIOS will handle it fine.

  • Flash BIOS Update

If your system is not yet plugged into a suitable power outlet, plug it in last:

    1. Reboot the system and press F12 at the current Dell Welcome screen.

      ubuntu update dell bios

  • Create A Bootable USBhopper With FreeDOS (legacy Systems)

Attention! This method will NOT work only on USB 3.0 sites. This process is provided as basic and as a courtesy requires the use of third party utilities to create the actual bootable USB drive. This process is not only supported by Dell Technical Support. Proceed at your own risk.

    ubuntu update dell bios

On legacy Linux and Ubuntu, and on systems often older than 2015, you will need to update using the BIOS as follows:

Note. This procedure may not work on systems that did not ship with a factory Linux installation. This process is assigned both on and off as a courtesy, usually requiring the use of third-party utilities to expand the bootable USB drive. This period is not supported by Dell Technical Support.

Users must create each FreeDOS bootable USB storage device to perform a BIOS overview.

Note. Keep in mind that again, this process is unlikely to work on systems where it mightnot be installed by FreeDOS or Linux at the factory.

Download immediately after loading in the system:

    • You can find the latest BIOS programs at www.dell.com/support/drivers.
    • The FreeDOS ISO 1.0 base is available at www.freedos.org/download.
    • UNetbootin, which can be created by going to the Linux Software Center, searching for UNetbootin and then installing it.

    Aetbootin

Once placed, launch the program and select each of our disk image options. Then install it on the ISO and even select the base FreeDOS ISO registry that you downloaded earlier.

    v

select “Type” as USB storage and as storage as / dev / sdb1 and click OK.

Use the main image below attached to the UNetbootin screen as an example.

After completing the setup, copy the BIOS .exe file to your computer’s USB drive.

Update BIOS On Dell Systems Prior To 2015

    1. After copying the Adobe Flash BIOS file, restart the human body and press F12 at the Dell logo to display a dedicated One Time Boot Menu

    2. Select the USB storage device you want to boot from.

    3. When the Start menu appears on your computer, select the fdos option and then Safe Search Mode.

Warning: Do not load FreeDOS onto your hard drive, as this tool may damage your operating system.

    1. displays the A: prompt after the boot sequence is complete.

    2. Change the drive letter to real or b: C: (mail from the drive assigned to the USB stick.)

    3. Enter the names of all BIOS firmware files in

to start the update process, eg. O9010A12.exe and drag Enter.

    4. As soon as

    5. each update is complete, the configuration should be restarted automatically.
