I just got back to my computer. I know (I shouldn’t use it, but… Win, but) XP after a day of absence.

I got a message saying Malware Bytes update failed to install [something I didn’t see], do I want to reboot and try again?

I did that, and after installing the system, I had no icons, start menu on the desktop, and no activity bar.

I don’t have OS memory, and I don’t need to rebuild the entire drive. The only thing I can do is stay online!

On a blank desktop, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to open Task Manager. In pageFrom the menu, choose File > New Task in (Run). Type explorer.exe and check OK. Does the menu start upside down?

Thank you for your reply. I’m doing what you said, but I didn’t get the result I was hoping for. No icons, task tavern or start menu.

I left the Chrome browser running and minimized the app (which shows a black box instead of a career bar). In many cases, I can click and almost all the usual controls will be displayed, and I can restore an intact browser to all open tabs on the other side.

Actually, I’m afraid to get close to the browser (Chrome) because it’s actually the only part of my computer that works in the above location.

If that doesn’t work, I don’t see how the XP installation disc can be repaired. I can’t guarantee this, but if you restart your computer you should be able to enter safe mode with F8 at boot time. This will happen at least with XP or vehicle operators. You can then use System Restore to get your computer back to when it was working. This is the case if you have enabled System Restore

Do you have a particular working XP machine? Follow all the steps here to create another boot disk that can be used to restore your system to a good non-bootable XP. You can use Isoburner, also known as Imgburn, to burn the ISO, but if you don’t have the softwareabout securing, you can burn the image. Now you can also use this hard drive to improve data on an external USB drive, but you must first connect the USB drive to your computer before booting the hard drive itself.

For XP, I recommend downloading Linux Puppy 5.2.8. You can burn an ISO file to a hard drive that Windows 7 implements by right-clicking and choosing “Burn Image” or using any image burning program such as Isoburner or Imgburn. If you choose to use Imgburn, disable all optional programs. Burn the iso to four if possible.

After burning the shoe image, a puppy disk will be created. There is nothing on the hard disk paper. There is RAM and CD. With Puppy, you can save your personal data to an external drive.

If you define a use for Puppy, post it and I’ll give you more details. Another way to get your personal information is to remove the desired hard drive and connect it to another computer using an adapter, an external case, or an internal case.

Please don’t think I’m ungrateful. I really appreciate your advice. I haven’t worked yet because I’m not sure I’ve lost everything.

While eventually all the icons disappeared from my screen and our own start menu disappeared – all of which could have disappeared when logged in as an administrator – they still show up when I log into another non-administrator account . For this reason, I am convinced that I have not lost everything.

So, I’m starting to wonder if I can restore the system to various other accounts and restore everything as much as possible. This should show how new I am to this stuff! Anyway, here we are… And thanks again. I’ll document this after I try it.

In my experience, you probably haven’t lost anything yet. If you can recover, you should still be fine. Once you’ve figured this out, you really should consider switching to a different operating system. If it’s an old computer with little RAM and a small hard drive, Linux would be a good choice! as I did with my legacy XP machine. It looks like everyone is infected and it has corrupted some OS documents, this has happened to me several times. If this is a problem, then I don’t think it’s worth running antivirus software systems. Also, if a restore definitely doesn’t work, someone here might see your component and help you get straight to the point, like “I’m infected, what should I do?” Be patient, I have the impression that you are unsure of the protocol. So stay tuned for this post for another 24 hours orlonger if one of the moderators steps in and does it.
